Wayne Viney

Wayne Viney is an artist and printmaker primarily known for his monotypes. He studied graphic design at Swinburne College graduating with a diploma in Art and Design in 1971. He became a full time artist in the mid-1980s and was a member of Roar 2 studios from 1995 until 2000. Wayne is best known for his moody twilight studies, drawing upon the painterly potential of mono-types to rework the Romantic tradition.

A mono-type is a one-off print. It is essentially a simple process of painting an image on a surface, such as an etching plate or an acrylic sheet etc. Once the image is complete, the plate is printed like a conventional print. A sheet of dampened paper is placed on the plate and it is run through a printing press.
Unlike ordinary prints where an edition is made, mono-types only produce one print. A mono-type is a unique image, not capable of being printed in an edition.
