Joseph Austin

Australian nature themes are at the heart of Joe’s artwork , particularly birds and plants or anything in between. He approaches subjects as a new experience of understanding- a little science, its character and its place in the world.

Joe’s formal training in etching and painting started at the art school campus situated on the Hobart waterfront from 1996 to 1999. It was an old jam factory re-fitted into an art school. Techniques he learnt there have been developing ever since. After his time at the school he ran an artist-run gallery at Salamanca Place in Hobart for a couple of years. Returning to Sydney and finally settling in the Budgewoi area.

Etching is a highly developed skill which involves a design made into a copper engraving and then printed on a high-pressure press. His work is engaging and delightful.
